Further Discussion on Topic B!
Hello lovely delegates of NAM! With BMUN 70 quickly approaching, I wanted to offer some guidance on your solutions for Topic B, and the different avenues you should be exploring. Something I’m hoping you bring to the table in committee is a different perspective on international legislation on WMDs. The topic synopsis discusses the NPT and the TPNW, but feel free to dive into other political texts. Especially as representatives of NAM, our hope for the committee is that you can re-evaluate some of these keystone pieces of legislation through the perspective of the Global South, deciphering what changes can or should be made to increase effectiveness.
The article attached below, “Is the NPT Still Relevant - How to Progress the NPT’s Disarmament Provisions,” examines the original intentions of the NPT compared to its current role in facilitating international relations, evaluates the structure of the document, and analyzes what action has been taken over the past 80 years to execute the provisions of the NPT (for example, many nations stress the importance of the counter-horizontal proliferation clause while choosing to ignore disarmament). The points discussed within this article demonstrate the type of critical analysis of widely-accepted treaties we hope to see from you delegates. Consider reading through this article and applying the concepts to your country’s policy and perspective. How have international relations changed since the ratification of the NPT? Has your nation made significant changes under its provisions? What can be done to update and increase the outreach of the NPT (if that’s your policy)? Does the international community still have a need for the NPT? These questions and more can help you brainstorm effective ways to approach this topic from the perspective of the Global South and evaluate the ways in which the international community can change its approach to international legislation.
Happy reading!! Only 16 days until BMUN!!!
