Introduction (Vivian Kuang)
Hi everyone and welcome to the NAM blog!
My name is Vivian Kuang and I’ll be one of your NAM vice chairs at BMUN 70. I’m a sophomore majoring in Political Economy and Data Science, and I'm originally from here in the Bay Area.
Within my majors, my concentrations are in inequality, particularly social inequality in the US. Some things I'm particularly interested in are incarceration, capitalism, and racial justice/Asian American studies. But, I think it's really informative and important to examine structures of inequality on a global level as well, which this committee has definitely helped me with! My hope is that this committee will be a learning experience for you as well and help you think critically about the international order, including international institutions like the UN.
Outside of BMUN, I work at the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights in Oakland, where I help with research and advocacy for state legislation to decarcerate California and deconstruct the prison industrial complex. I also was a figure skater for almost a decade before stopping because of the pandemic, and this year one of my goals is to start training again and get involved with Cal Figure Skating! In my free time, you'll probably find me reading, doing jigsaw puzzles, and trying to teach myself the guitar.
If any of that interests you or if you have questions about committee, BMUN, Berkeley, or anything else, please reach out! We want to get to know you and help you in any way we can. I'm very excited for my first in-person BMUN in March and I hope you are too!
